Machaca Fly Fishing via Kayak in Costa Rica

“Kayak fishing in Costa Rica is often focused mostly on the inshore saltwater scene…but not anymore!” – Jesse Males

Recently I had the pleasure of hitting the machaca river with my little brother Brody Males and good friend Michael Triano. Upon arriving at the water we realized that the water was super super low which typically means a slow day of machaca fishing. However, with no other options we launched the kayaks and began our quest to get Michael on his first ever machaca here in Costa Rica.

As you can see we had super clear water all day long which made for a great time hopping in and out of the kayak in order to cool off. Thankfully it didn’t take long for my brother to hookup on a machaca and get it to the boat!

After a few laughs, photos, and a smooth release we were back at it again and doing everything we could to get Michael on his fish. Thankfully, only a few more bends of the river and wham!!! FISH ON!

Landing one of these fish for the first time is a fantastic experience. These fish hit the fly super hard, jump, and make some impressive runs while hooked. Times like these are certainly meant to be shared with other good friends and anglers!
