“SUP fishing for machaca here in Costa Rica is something that is quickly becoming an addiction of mine.” – Jesse Males
Fly fishing for machaca is as action packed as fishing can get. Adrenaline filled topwater eats, hard runs and high jumps makes this fish the ideal sport fish for the traveling fly angler.

As you can tell these fish don’t play around. Serious teeth make handling these fish a challenge and pliers are definitely something that you will want to have handy.
While these fish eat mainly fruits and flowers they do eat sardines and any insects that they may find on the waters surface. 8wt rods and floating line helps ensure a strong hook set and allows enough backbone to control most fish. A big machaca has been known to snap a 8wt so fishing anything less makes loosing a trophy fish a real possibility.
