“For me, when it comes guapote fishing in Costa Rica, the hunt is what it is all about.” – Jesse Males
Those of you that follow my blog and videos know that I am all about the adventure. No matter if I am backpacking for high mountain cutthroat trout out west or digging through the jungles of Costa Rica for guapote and machaca, I am all about the hunt.
Sure, you can fly into Costa Rica and catch a guapote in a stocked pond…but that just isn’t my style. So, recently I got to head out with some good friends to search out some flooded rivers and lagoons in search of guapote here in Costa Rica.
Despite high water conditions that would have most anglers calling it quits, we pushed ahead and made the best out of the 3 day camping experience.
Below is a short video featuring some of the action during our time in the backcountry.

As you can see from this trip, we were definitely back in the cut for sure. An 8 hour paddle lead us to multiple hours of meandering around flooded lagoons and fishing blown out creeks.
I had multiple chances to land a guapote on fly during this trip but could not get the hook to stick. However, my friends Danny, Mark, and Wilmer didn’t seem to have that problem with their spinning gear. They all landed multiple fish. Wilmer being the leader of the trip with a total of 12 guapote in what seemed like two very short days.
Since I was a little kid these are the trips that I have loved to be a part of. They put you in places most anglers don’t go and give you the chance to experience the wild on your own terms. No stocked lakes or heavily managed areas, just wilderness.
